Advocacy and Assistance
As a parent/child advocate, I am able to serve in a variety of roles including acting as a liaison between home and school, working in conjunction with the parent and school to develop an individualized educational program, accompanying parents to a variety of school based meetings, or, if the child is already being homeschooled, assisting parents with curricular choices, goal setting, and documentation. With over 25 years experience in special education, I am familiar with IDEA language, practice, and law and am comfortable working in a collaborative way within the framework of the IEP team.
According to individual needs, services offered as a parent/student advocate include but are not limited to:
- Review of Evaluation Team Reports (ETRs) or other testing
- IEP development and/or review
- Explanation of ETR and IEP language
- Assistance with identifying and procuring related services
- Understanding Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
- Accompaniment to IEP meetings
- Assisting homeschool parents with a service plan for their own goal setting and documentation
- Informal assessments and curricular recommendations
- Consultation for future planning
- Tutoring or instructional support
- Transition to college or career (test prep, résumé building)
